The 5th “Archaeozoology and Genetics Working Group” will be organized by Angela Schlumbaum, Jörg Schibler and Julia Elsner from the Institute of Prehistory and Archaeological Science (IPAS) and will take place in Basel, Switzerland.
In 2012, IPAS celebrates 50 years affiliation to the university. It was founded by Elisabeth Schmid in 1953 as “Labor für Urgeschichte” (Laboratory for Protohistory), and was initially affiliated to the “Gesellschaft für Ur- und Frühgeschichte” (Society for Proto- and Prehistory). IPAS today belongs to the department Environmental Science and has large research groups in archaeozoology, archaeobotany, geoarchaeology and prehistory, encompassing periods from the late Palaeolithic to Early modern times, and, since 1993, also a laboratory for ancient.
DNA research, focussing in particular on plants and animals. With this longstanding excellence in archaeobiology, our experience in archaeogenetics of plants and animals and in teaching students using genetic results, we like to place the focus of this working group on topics related to archaeozoological and archaeobotanical questions.
The structure of the workshop will be as usual: presentations/posters with enough time for discussions, good food, a welcome reception, plus a common dinner and an interesting excursion.
Contributions are invited in the following research areas:
Animals and plants during cultural transitions
Domestication
Species, breed and cultivar identification
Genetic variability of domestic and wild species through time
Animal and plant migration
Animals and plants as proxies for human behaviour
Lost diversity - selection through time
New genome technology in archaeology
Teaching archaeogenetics – are archaeology students thrilled to work in a genetic lab?
