In Memoriam: Micheline van Effenterre

(1915-2012)

Micheline van Effenterre-Cochard, wife of Henri van Effenterre, passed away on the 1st of July 2012 at the age of 97. Micheline Cochard was born on 1 November 1915 at Chernex-Montreux. She began her career by attending the Institut d’Art and the École du Louvre. In 1937 she went to Athens accompanying Leopold Dor, and the following year she was invited by Jean Jannoray and Henri van Effenterre, to participate in the excavations of the École française d’Athènes at Krisa and Kirrha near Delphi. From this moment Micheline and Henri van Effenterre became partners in life and work. They had 6 children.

In the 1950s and onwards together with her husband she started excavations at Mallia. She contributed in several volumes of ‘Fouilles exécutées à Mallia’. In 1972 together with Henri they published the Minoan and Mycenaean seals from the Cabinet des Medailles de Paris, while in 1991 in collaboration with J. Mastorakis she wrote the book ‘Les Minoens : l’âge d’or de la Crète’.
