Inland Epirus has been the focus of multi-disciplinary archaeological research since the early 1960’s. Research has been fruitful as far as the Palaeolithic period and the Upper Pleistocene environment are concerned, whereas the oncoming Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age periods are still underrepresented. The surface survey presented here focused on the area of Ioannina in order to locate any possible manifestations of post-Palaeolithic prehistoric activity. Research was centred in the regions of Asfaka-Protopappa and Parakalamos-Mazaraki. Although visibility for ground survey was in general low due to the abandonment of fields and the re-growth of thick vegetation cover, various locations suitable for further investigation have been identified. The artefacts recovered in the investigated areas represent both prehistoric and historical cultural periods; frequent Late Bronze Age finds suggest intensified activity for this period. The cultural attribution of the artefacts is supported by radiocarbon dates obtained from selected charcoal samples.
