Federico Halbherr explored the region of Mylopotamos and Amari in august 1894, within an extensive research program in Crete funded by the American Institute of Archaeology. The paper shows the political and cultural context in which the journey of Halbherr begins. All of the observations and notes compiled at that time are reported here. The aim is to frame the modus operandi used by Halbherr in his research, and to reframe Italian activity in the peripheral regions of Mount Ida.
