From the preface

My participation from 2006 until today in the archaeological excavation conducted by the University of Athens’ Department of Archaeology and History of Art at the Mycenaean settlement and cemetery at the site of Lazarides on Aegina, under the direction of professor N. Polychronakou-Sgouritsa, was the starting point for my involvement in this issue. The results of this research, which is still ongoing, reveal an important settlement with a long life in the semimountainous south-southeast part of the island, located diametrically opposite Kolonna, the acme of which coincided with the latter settlement’s decline. Right from the start, questions were raised as regards the integration and role of this site on the island, particularly since the literature refers to the existence of another cemetery at the settlement of Kylindras, very close to Lazarides, and of a fortified settlement at the peak of Mt Oros, the highest mountain in the Saronic gulf. Alongside the excavation, therefore, surveys were made initially in the southern part of the island, which subsequently expanded to the whole of the island with the aim of drawing up as complete as possible a map of Mycenaean Aegina. This fieldwork led to the reconstruction of the Late Helladic habitation of the island outside of the main port and the large centre of Kolonna.

In the Introduction (I), the chronological boundaries of the study as well as the methods and problems or difficulties that can arise in studies of this kind are discussed. This is followed by Chapter II on the research thus far, from the era when the first travellers visited Aegina until today. The island’s physical geography (coasts, terrain, geology, waters, climate) is described in Chapter III. In addition to the flora and fauna, one section of this chapter is dedicated to an analysis of the island’s economic potential on the basis of the topography and the ancient sources. The main bulk of the study is taken up by the Catalogue of Sites (Chapter IV), which includes all the sites where even the smallest trace of a Mycenaean presence has been found, from an isolated pottery fragment to an extensive settlement or cemetery. The Catalogue is comprised of twenty-four numbered site entries.

The presentation of the archaeological remains is followed by that of the synthesis of the data. In Chapter V, the settlement pattern and its development in different Mycenaean phases and parts of the island, possibly “fortified” Late Helladic sites, as well as cases of cult practice in important sanctuaries of the early historical period from as early as the Late Helladic times, are studied in separate sections. The Conclusion to the study (Chapter VI) provides an overview of the island’s history and its position in the Mycenaean world from the 16th to the 12th century BC. Two appendixes at the end examine the relationship of prehistoric Aegina with the ancient literary sources as well as the mystery of the Aegina “treasure”.
