Abstract

During 1977 and 1997, a wide range of rescue excavations were conducted in the archaeological site of Dimini from the 13th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, focusing on the area east, south and north of the hill, where the Neolithic settlement was located. The excavations covered an area of 2.852 m2, uncovering mainly the remains of a large, well-organized Mycenaean city.

The target of this book is dual: first, it presents the findings of the archaeological excavations, during these two decades, as well as the results obtained from the relevant studies (architecture, pottery, small finds); secondly, it attempts to demonstrate the diachronic role of the Bronze Age settlement at Dimini, not only in the adjacent geographical area, especially in relation to the other two, well-known contemporary sites in the Pagasetic Gulf (Kastro Volou/Palia and Pefkakia), but also in the wider area of Bronze Age Thessaly, in an attempt to highlight inter-settlement economic and sociopolitical relations.
