Obituary of Professor John Evans

Professor John Evans, who died on July 4 aged 86, served as director of the Institute of Archaeology (now part of University College London) from 1973 to 1989 and won renown for his research into the prehistory of the Mediterranean, especially the prehistoric cultures of Malta. He excavated several key megalithic sites in Malta during the 1940s and 1950s, and in 1952 was invited by the Royal University of Malta to prepare a catalogue of the National Museum collections in Valletta and to oversee archaeological fieldwork on the island. Based at Valletta Museum, he painstakingly compiled catalogues of prehistoric material housed in the museum and at prehistoric sites in Malta and Gozo.
