The international conference ‘Archaeology and Heinrich Schliemann: A Century after his Death’ took place in April 1990 on the 100 years anniversary of Heinrich Schliemann’s death. The various difficulties that have prevented the publication of the conference proceedings ever since were resolved due to the generous financial support of the J.F. Costopoulos Foundation, granted during 2007 and 2008.

Although two decades have passed since the realization of the conference, the electronic publication contributions will, albeit belatedly, restore the bibliographical gap created by the unpublished proceedings. The current revival of historiographical interest in the pioneer Heinrich Schliemann and in the excavations he conducted at a time when the foundations of modern professional archeology had not been laid yet, justify the re-collection of the 68 original contributions in this volume. These cover the whole spectrum of the activity and scientific contribution of Schliemann and outline the broader socio-political and ideological profile of his era. The progression to the electronic age has necessitated the re-typing and review of several essays by the editors and in some cases, where this was possible, by their own authors as well.
