Landscape archaeology became prominent within the field of Archaeology in the later 20th century, driven by the rise of systematic surface survey and by a desire to understand humans’ experience of the world (e.g. David & Thomas 2008).
When I was at Oxford in the late 1970s, even a mild suggestion that the Minoans might have owed a small part of their culture to Egyptian or Near Eastern ‘influences’ was crushed by sardonic cries of “ex oriente lux!”
The present monograph marks the first comprehensive publication of a systematically excavated prehistoric metal production workshop in the Aegean. Although other broadly contemporaneous slag heaps are known in this region, the site of Chrysokamino in north-eastern Crete represents a particularly interesting, in many ways distinctive, example.
(Review in Greek) Το βιβλίο αυτό αποτελεί προϊόν μίας συνάντησης, όπως αναφέρει και ο τίτλος, η οποία διοργανώθηκε από το Τμήμα Ιστορίας και Αρχαιολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης στο Ρέθυμνο το 2003. Η θεματική της συνάντησης περιέλαβε την ιστορία και τις νέες τάσεις της έρευνας, τη σχέση της αιγαιακής αρχαιολογίας με το κοινό, επιστημονικό και ευρύτερο, τη σχέση της έρευνας και εκπαίδευσης.
