Aurignacian Clay Hearths from Klissoura Cave 1 The Klissoura cave site (Argolid, Greece) is a multi–layered site with layers dating back to the Middle Palaeolithic. In the Aurignacian layer were found concave clay forms which are estimated, by C14 dates, to be 35–37.5 calibrated kyrs BP. In this study the author takes an experimental approach to investigate these important primitive features.

Σε μικρή απόσταση ανατολικά από το Ξηροκάμπι και επί του δρόμου προς αυτό βρίσκεται ο αρχαιολογικός χώρος του Αγίου Βασιλείου. Αν και γνωστός στη βιβλιογραφία και κηρυγμένος από τη δεκαετία του ’60, ο χώρος αυτός δεν είχε, μέχρι πρόσφατα, ερευνηθεί ανασκαφικά.

The annular solar eclipse, of 30 October 1207 B.C. (Julian Day-JD 1280869), calculated by NASA together with the analysis of the weather’s and the environment’s description (long nights, plants, animals and peoples’ habits) and the astronomical data (guiding constellations and Venus in the east horizon) mentioned by Homer in the epic, constitute an autumn return of Odysseus to Ithaca five days before the above characterized day.

The Trojan War was very significant for the ancient Greeks and they dated historical events according to the number of years after the fall of Troy. However, there was already in antiquity no consensus as to the exact date of the war when compared with different epochs. Even after the modern discovery of the ancient city, there has been disagreement among different excavators as to which layer corresponds to the city mentioned in the Iliad attributed to Homer.

Die Synchronisierung der minoischen Alt- und Neupalastzeit mit der ägyptischen Chronologie Absolute dates for the Minoan Old- and New Palace Period are still under discussion. While the ‘traditional’ chronology favored a date for the Santorini eruption at the end of the chronological phase Late Minoan IA around 1500 BC based on archaeological evidence and the historical chronology of Egypt, adherents of the ‘high’ chronology placed the eruption in second half of the 17th century BC based on radiocarbon evidence.

Ένα από τα πιο ιδιότυπα σχήματα αγγείων της μινωικής εποχής είναι το «κύπελλο κοινωνίας». Με τον όρο αυτό χαρακτηρίζεται ένας τύπος κυπέλλου με βαθύ κωνικό δοχείο και διακρινόμενο, συνήθως κυλινδρικό, πόδι, που προσομοιάζει, όπως πρώτος παρατήρησε ο Α. Evans, προς τα εκκλησιαστικά δισκοπότηρα (chalices).

This book by Louise Maguire represents a new departure from the traditional analysis of material culture; she has analysed pottery decoration by looking at traces of painting practices.

Συμπληρώνονται φέτος 20 χρόνια από τον θάνατο του Νικολάου Πλάτωνος (1909-1992). Θεώρησα σκόπιμο με την ευκαιρία αυτή, τιμώντας τη μνήμη του, να δημοσιεύσω μία παραλλαγή της ομιλίας που έκανα στο φιλολογικό μνημόσυνο που οργάνωσε παλαιότερα ο Δήμος Ηρακλείου, στην οποία αναφέρθηκα σε μία λιγότερο γνωστή πτυχή της προσφοράς του, αυτή του κλασικού αρχαιολόγου και επιγραφολόγου.

There have been excavations at a number of sites, notably around Sparta and at Anthochori by the Fifth Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, as well as at Geraki, Kouphovouno and Pavlopetri.
