The absence of architectural remains in the few excavated prehistoric settlements of Epirus has been interpreted by many researchers as a proof that the prehistoric inhabitants of Epirus were nomads. The characterization of a site as a permanent or a temporal installation has been based for a long time on the analysis of the archaeozoological material (sex and age of the animals).

Στην ύστερη εποχή του Χαλκού, ο Γλυκύς Λιμήν, αρχαίος κόλπος στην κατώτερη κοιλάδα του ποταμού Αχέροντα, διαδραμάτισε σημαντικό ρόλο ως λιμάνι στο ενεργητικό ναυτικό εμπόριο ανάμεσα στην ηπειρωτική Ελλάδα και την κεντρική Μεσόγειο. Εκεί, στην περιοχή της μεταγενέστερης Εφύρας και στο περιβάλλον της, ιδρύθηκε ένα μυκηναϊκό-ηπειρωτικό κέντρο.

Inland Epirus has been the focus of multi-disciplinary archaeological research since the early 1960’s. Research has been fruitful as far as the Palaeolithic period and the Upper Pleistocene environment are concerned, whereas the oncoming Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age periods are still underrepresented.

From 2006 to 2012 new investigations were conducted on the steep hill of Kastri on Syros under the auspices of the Archaeological Society at Athens and the direction of the author. These included further excavation, aerial photography and surveying of the building remains.

The Middle and Late Cycladic pottery from the Cave of Zas on Naxos offers useful information about those periods on the island, and their presence at the site provides the first example of the use of a cave in the Cyclades in the 2nd millennium BC.
