The University of Minnesota has a proud tradition of involvement in Greek archaeology. From the l950s to the 1970s, Professor William MacDonald and the Minnesota Messenia Expedition, with campaigns of field survey and excavations, made pioneering contributions to the study of the Bronze Age in the Peloponnesos. In the early 1980s, Professor Carl Sheppard excavated the Frankish cathedal at Andravida, built in the Gothic style of the early 13th century. For nearly a decade, however, this tradidon was interrupted. The 1990s mark another stage of the University of Minnesota’s continued interest and invovlement in Peloponnesian archaeology. This new program of research and exploration, headed by Professor Frederick Cooper, spans the 3 millennia from the Bronze Age through the Middle Ages to the present day, and introduces undergraduate and graduate students to innovative and exciting archaeological applications.
