Eυθύς μετά την ίδρυση του ελληνικού κράτους, το 1830, που ακολούθησε τον μεγάλο Aγώνα του 1821, τέθηκαν στις πρώτες κυβερνήσεις τα μεγάλα προβλήματα της οικονομίας, της διοίκησης και της εκπαίδευσης. Tο τελευταίο αυτό πρόβλημα περιλάμβανε και τις αρχαιότητες τις οποίες επί αιώνες λεηλατούσαν και κατέστρεφαν οι αρχαιοκάπηλοι.
Founded in 1881, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens provides graduate students and scholars from a consortium of about 190 North American colleges and universities a base for research and study in Greece. These institutions, with programs in classical archaeology, classics, linguistic studies, Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Greek studies, archaeological sciences, political science, history, and other social sciences, regard the outstanding academic programs, excavations, libraries and other facilities of the American School as extensions of their own institutions’ graduate programs.
Το Κέντρο Έρευνας και Συντήρησης Αρχαιολογικού Υφάσματος (ARTEX), είναι μία αστική μή κερδοσκοπική εταιρεία που ιδρύθηκε το 2002 κατόπιν πρωτοβουλίας της Γιούλης Σπαντιδάκη, βιολόγου και ερευνήτριας παλαιών υφασμάτων, της Ίριδος Τζαχίλη, καθηγήτριας προϊστορικής αρχαιολογίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης και της Ελίζας Πολυχρονιάδου, μουσειολόγου και συντηρήτριας οργανικών υλικών. Το ARTEX διοικείται από Εταίρους και απαρτίζεται από μέλη.

The Institute is a nonprofit group founded in 1879 and chartered by the United States Congress in 1906.
