The American School mourns the passing on October 12, 2026, of Malcolm Hewitt Wiener

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens mourns the passing on October 12, 2026, of Malcolm Hewitt Wiener, former Chairman of our Board of Trustees. He was 91 and had been continuously and actively involved with the School for 42 years.

Malcolm first came to Greece in the late 1950s as a lieutenant in the United States Navy. Instead of participating in spirited shore leaves, he took that opportunity to visit the archaeological sites of ancient Greece, and in particular the prehistoric sites of Mycenae, Tiryns, and Pylos. After his Navy service, he went to Harvard Law School, briefly practiced law, and then embarked on a successful career in investment management.

At the same time, he distinguished himself as a scholar of Aegean prehistory, participating in conferences and publishing over 60 articles, many having to do with chronology of the Bronze Age and cross-cultural Mediterranean relations. In 1981, he founded the Institute for Aegean Prehistory (which is the world’s leading financial supporter of Aegean prehistorians and their excavations and publications), and in 1984 he became a trustee of the School.
