A Theatre/Archaeology Performance in a Prehistoric Excavation

Neo Monastiri, Pthiotida, Greece, 25 September, 18:00

On the 25th of September at 18.00 a lecture-briefing will take place in the Municipality Hall of Neo Monastiri, Fthiotis, about the excavation on the Koutroulou Magoula, a tell-site that was inhabited since the middle Neolithic period (6th millennium BC). The excavation is carried out by the Archaeological Service and the University of Southampton, as part of the Archaeology and Archaeological Ethnography Project under the supervision of Dr. Nina Kyparissi-Apostolika and Prof. Yannis Hamilakis. After the briefing, the theatre/archaeology performance “The Meal” will take place at 19.30 on site (48th km P.E.O. Lamia-Larisa), deviced by Thanasis Deligiannis and Efthimis Theou. The performance, the material of which derives from the excavation’s finds and the distinctive local musical tradition, touches on the multifaceted subject of food and the role of meal as a diachronic social phenomenon as well as an experience.

In recent years, a “dialogue” has started between archaeology and theatre, which resulted in the creation of a ‘hybrid’ discipline that uses theatrical methods to examine archaeological material and archaeological methods to approach the art of theatre. The performance at Koutroulou Magoula is one of the first attempts to explore the borders of this kind of communication in Greece. The goal is a new, experiential relation between the archaeological space and both the local community and the researchers.

Part of the event will also be the cooking of local food on site that will be offered to the attendees after the end of the performance.

Under the auspices of Domokos Municipality and with the help of Vardali Women’s Association.
