Demetrius U. Schilardi passed away

It is with great sadness that I relate the news that Demetrius U. Schilardi passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 8, 2020. Demetrius Schilardi was born December 17, 1944 although his birth certificate states January 5, 1945, as this was the earliest that his mother could register his birth due to street fighting during the civil war. Schilardi graduated from the University of Athens and immediately began his studies at Princeton, receiving his PhD in 1978.

Schilardi held professorial positions at the University of Ottawa (1974-1992) and the University of Lecce (1989-1992) and was a member of the Greek Archaeological Service. As a member of the service, he conducted excavations in Attica, notably around Kefissia and Marousi. However, his most significant work was the excavation of the Koukounaries Hill on Paros (1976-1992), where he uncovered a Mycenaean building complex of the 12th century, a settlement of the Geometric period, and an Archaic sanctuary to Demeter.
