Abstract

Eltyna or Eltynia is a Greek town located close to the village Kounavi in central Crete. The location of the ancient town became known ninety years ago after the discovery of an archaic inscription which records penalties for causing injuries to boys and adolescents. It records the ethnic name of the town’s citizens together with authorities and political institutions accountable to the state, which was an autonomous polity (polis).

The cemetery of the town is located south of the village Kounavi and was partly excavated in 1993 and 1998. It includes various types of tombs dating from the Subminoan to the Late Geometric period. The most spectacular monument and visible architectural feature in the cemetery is a well-built tholos tomb, 2,60 m. in diameter with its floor laid with large flagstones. Access is provided by a rock-cut dromos with a marked inclination towards the entrance, which was blocked by a monolithic slab. Another small tholos (beehive) tomb was excavated nearby. The most frequent type of tomb is, however the small chamber tomb cut out of the soft rock with an inclining dromos and a door closed by a rubble wall, a standard form in contemorary Knossian cemeteries. Other types are the oval and “lobbed” pit dug into the rock and a unique case of a pit with a cavity at the bottom. All the tombs date to the Subminoan and Protogeometric period, the only exception being the tholos tomb which remained in use until the end of the Geometric period. Inhumation and cremation in both urns and amphorae was practiced.

Most of the pottery is of Knossian fabric, technique and style, except for a number of vases imitating Attic or Cypriot forms (such as the small ribbed oinochoe). There are also a few imported vases (e.g. the mushroom-lipped Red slip lekythos). The clay of Protogeometric-Geometric fine ware is usually of pale orange or buff colour. The gritty orange fabric is used for large, coarse, plain pithoi and domestic ware. A thin yellow wash is often added on Protogeometric pottery. Protogeometric decorative techniques include the characteristic spraying, dipping and partial dipping in paint, most commonly applied on drinking vessels. The clay used in the manufactrure of Geometric four-handled ovoid pithoi is as carefully prepared as that used for the production of fine ware, though the micaceous red and the gritty orange fabric is still characteristic of coarse ware. The commonest Protogeometric shapes are the necked pithoi, neck-handled amphorae, bell-kraters and kalathoi. although Subminoan shapes such as the stirrup-jar or the thelastron continue into Protogeometric period. Decoration other than banding is confined to the shoulder-zone of closed vessel types. In the Protogeometric period the concentric circular decoration is introduced to the pottery production of Eltyna and is gradually joined by a new repertoire of rectilinear motifs. This change is under the influence of Attic style, also visible in conteproraty Knossian pottery. Among shapes some novelties occur. In addition to local forms a remarkable number of Attic shapes is copied under the influence of attic imports.
