Field school opportunities at Kissonerga-Skalia in Cyprus
Excavations at Kissonerga-Skalia, conducted annually from 2007 by Dr. Lindy Crewe of the University of Manchester, have revealed a settlement that was continuously occupied from at least the beginning of the Early Bronze Age (ca. 2500 BC) into the start of the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1600 BC). Located in the west coastal plain of the island of Cyprus, the site lies only three hundred meters from the Mediterranean Sea. Archaeological remains at Skalia consist primarily of multiple superimposed phases of rectilinear architecture, with a pre-Bronze Age component and a final phase of large-scale architecture.
This season, we will be running two excavation teams, focussing on distinct chronological phases of the site, the pre-Bronze Age deposits (Chalcolithic, c. 3900-2500 BC) and those dating to the transition to the Late Cypriot Bronze Age (c. 1650 BC).
Depending on interests and time commitments, participants may select to focus on one of these areas. It is necessary to participate for the entire season. Please email the relevant person directly for further information on costs and to obtain an application form.
Chalcolithic
Previous test investigations in the north of the site revealed a human burial in a grave which had been cut into deposits that contained purely Chalcolithic pottery, as well as scattered animal and human remains. It will be the objective of one field school to begin the investigation of this intriguing Early Prehistoric component of the site.

Middle-Late Bronze Age transition
During the final phase, at the transition to the Late Bronze Age, a large-scale building complex with evidence for domestic and industrial activities, including beer production, was constructed. Our objective will be to continue to expose this complex and understand the nature of the final occupation before the site was abandoned.
