Although architecture provides a decisive frame-work for many forms of social interaction, thus preconfiguring them, and simultaneously represents an expression and hence a product of social conventions, few connections have thus far been made between the scholarly study of architecture and the social history of Mycenaean Greece. The present study attempts to fill this research gap with respect to the palace complexes of the Peloponnese. My approach is fundamentally based on a view of space that defines and analyses archaeologically documented space on three levels: diachronically stable fixed-feature elements, such as walls and floors; diachronically non-stable fixed-feature elements, such as wall-paintings; and semifixed-feature elements, i.e. movable archaeological finds. The logically following fourth level of nonfixed-feature elements, i.e. the actions of human agents that define social space, cannot normally be identified in archaeological remains. While textual sources provide an approach to discussing them, in principle, the paucity of Mycenaean written sources necessitates an indirect approach: I have undertaken a comparative study of the contemporary palace architecture of the Hittites, whose forms of use are reflected in the transmitted texts of the Anatolian civilization. This comparative approach can be developed either in arguments from analogy or, alternatively, as a discussion of phenomena of acculturation.
